What is Branding, really?
Welcome back to Rainbow Reflections.
One of the biggest questions I often get is, “What really is branding?” If your first thought is “It’s a logo, right?”you’re definitely not alone! A logo is part of your brand, but it’s only the part of the story.
A brand is a full experience that goes far beyond a single design. It’s the heart and personality of your business, the way you connect with your audience, and the story you tell through every touchpoint. So, what does branding really look like in action? In today's newsletter, I'm going to break it down.
Your Brand is Your Essence
Think of branding as the unique, beautiful essence of what you stand for. It’s the blend of your values, your story, and the feeling you want to create for those who experience your work. This “essence” is what connects you to your audience and creates a lasting impression.
Take Chani Nicholas, for example. Her brand essence is deeply rooted in empowerment, astrology, and authenticity. Every piece of content—from her horoscopes to her app—reflects a commitment to helping people understand themselves and their lives on a deeper level. Her brand essence shines through her voice, her visuals, and even her choice of topics, creating a space where her audience feels both seen and supported.
Similarly, your brand’s essence should reflect what you’re all about, how you make people feel, and what you’re here to bring to the world. When people experience your brand, they’re connecting with this essence—and it’s what keeps them coming back for more.
Visual Identity: More Than Just a Logo
Yes, branding includes visual elements, but it’s so much more than that! Branding encompasses the colors, fonts, imagery, and, of course, your logo. It incorporates elements that visually express your brand’s personality and bring it to life in a cohesive, memorable way.
Think about Bob’s Red Mill. Their visual identity—earthy tones, classic fonts, and vintage-inspired packaging—communicates a sense of warmth, wholesomeness, and tradition. Every detail, from the rustic packaging to the imagery of farms and grains, reinforces their commitment to natural, high-quality ingredients and a down-to-earth approach. This consistent visual style helps customers instantly recognize and trust the brand.
In the same way, your visual identity should reflect the essence of your brand and help clients connect with what you stand for. When colors, typography, and imagery all come together in harmony, they create a cohesive visual language that people remember.
Brand Voice: How You Connect
The way you communicate in your brand is just as important as the visuals you create for it. Your brand voice is the tone, style, and language you use to engage with clients. It’s the personality that comes through in your website, social posts, emails, and everything else your audience reads.
Think about how Target speaks to its customers. Target’s brand voice is friendly, down-to-earth, and playful, making its messaging feel accessible and enjoyable. Whether it’s in a quirky social media post or a straightforward store announcement, Target uses a warm, engaging tone that helps customers feel connected and welcome.
In the same way, a well-defined brand voice ensures your clients feel a connection to you, whether you’re welcoming them to your website or sharing a story on social media. This voice is how you’ll reassure, inspire, or delight your audience, and it builds familiarity and trust.
A Strategy for Connection: Why Branding Matters
A strong brand resonates deeply with the people you’re here to serve. When all the pieces of your brand—essence, visuals, and voice—come together, they create a powerful, memorable presence that helps people recognize you and feel a connection. Branding goes beyond the surface. It’s about building trust, sparking inspiration, and creating an experience that people will remember.
When your brand is aligned and authentic, it draws in your dream clients and makes them feel at home. Instead of just a “business,” you become a meaningful presence in their lives—one they want to connect with and return to.
